Answers to the questions we are asked most.
All your files live on secure storage in Amsterdam (the Netherlands), within the EU. They are stored encrypted and deleted automatically after the expiry period. The first three downloads of a transfer come straight from that storage, and after that too as long as the free download traffic our storage provider gives us each month has not run out. Beyond that, and for the other downloads (such as from a shared folder), the file travels to the recipient via Cloudflare's network; Cloudflare does not keep the files. One exception to those first three: if the recipient's browser cannot build a zip of several files itself, our server in Frankfurt builds that zip, and it then also goes via Cloudflare. If you enable an AI feature yourself — such as the cover note for a transfer, or text recognition (OCR) in the PDF tools — what that feature needs goes to our AI provider Anthropic in the United States: for the cover note the file names and at most three PDF files from your package, for OCR the page you convert. We keep nothing extra ourselves: recognised text is not stored, and the cover note lives with the transfer and disappears with it. If you do not use those features, nothing from your files goes to an AI. Full technical details are on the security page.
30 days by default. On a free account you pick 1 to 30 days per upload; on a paid plan that goes up to 90 days, and you can even set a link to never expire. Expired files are deleted automatically — not just made unreachable, but physically wiped from our servers.
Paid plans place no limit on the size of a single transfer — you are only bounded by your total storage. Free accounts can send up to 50 GB per transfer.
On the free account, recipients can download up to 100 GB per month in total via the links you send. There is no daily limit — only this monthly total counts, so you can quite happily have 30+ downloads in a single day. If you reach the monthly total, your links are paused until the next month — your files simply stay put and you receive a warning email beforehand. Paid plans have more generous limits that scale with your package. That is how we keep the servers fast and affordable for everyone.
Yes. No annual contracts, no notice period. Your plan runs until the end of the paid period; after that you fall back to the free 50 GB account and your files simply stay put.
Your own web address (yourcompany.downloadlink.nl) comes with the 500 GB plan and up; you set it up yourself on your account page. On the smaller plans you send from downloadlink.nl, with your own logo, name and colour on the download page. A fully custom domain (download.yourcompany.com) is available on request — get in touch and we will arrange it for you.
Yes, and it stays free — no time limit, no credit card. You get 50 GB of total storage and an unlimited number of transfers. If you need more space or premium features you can always upgrade — but you never have to.
